Hi two questions. and I am a simpleton when it comes to audacity, so please speak in laymans terms.

When I record distorted guitar with a microphone the sound is clear for a couple seconds, then sort of fades, becoming a quieter sound with a garbled effect on it. Also, if helpful, during the "garbled" sounds there are segments of obvious sine waves on the track, from an unmagnified view.

Here is another noob question, I cant record sounds coming from my own computer (without a mic), and I cant remember how to change that setting back.

This is a common issue with many modern computers that use on-board sound cards (particularly laptop PCs). Many of them do not have the ability to record "Stereo mix".

If you do not have "Stereo Mix", one possible workaround is to use a virtual device such as "Total Recorder" (not free).

Another option is to use an external sound card that has line level in and out sockets, then use an audio cable to feed the line level output back into the line level input.
