No sound any more after installation

I have installed Audicity on a Vista machine. Since then, sound from any other source (e.g. the ping when you are prompted by Windows to save a file, playing mp3 in Media Player and streaming audio from Accuradio.com) doens't come through any more. How could I solve this problem?

Are you by any chance using a USB device, external soundcard or turntable?

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I have installed Audacity in order to be able to record my vinyls and convert them to MP3.

When Windows detects a USB audio device, it hands over all of the sound system to it (recording and playback - even though your turntable is not a playback device  )

To fix the problem, go into the Windows Control Panel and reset the playback device to your sound card.
See here for details: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... trol_Panel

Alternatively, disconnect your turntable from the computer and reboot.

Thanks for your help.
It appears that disconnecting the turntable helps in any case. So, if things still go wrong this is the escape.
