Using Microsoft media Player, I've become accustomed to being able to grab the leading edge of a track and creating a cursor, and pulling that back and forth so that I could place it it anywhere in the track I wanted. I can then start running the track from that location immediately, or pause it and start running it when I'm ready. In Audacity 1.2.6 for Windows, I cannot seem to grab the leading-edge cursor to move it around, and I have not found anything in the help file on how to do so. Am I missing something here?

You can slide a track left and right with the Time Shift Tool or Project > Align Tracks.

There is only one cursor and that one settles wherever you click in the timeline. Audacity 1.3 has the ability to click above the timeline and start playing immediately from there.

Audacity will not scrub no matter what you do.

OK, I guess the clicking on the track in multi-tool mode is the best I can do for now. I'm looking forward to having the cursor feature in 1.3.

Selection Tool (F1)
Click on the track > a vertical line appears on the track - that is the track play position.
Click on the Play button or press the Spacebar - play commences from the play position.

Note that you can also zoom in or out on the track (magnifying glass icon or Ctrl+mouse wheel).

Click on the time ruler above the track for playback to start immediately from the selected position.

Drag the mouse cursor along a track with the left mouse button held down to select a region of the track, then press the Play button (or press the Spacebar) to play the selected region.

You can also use the cursor keys to move the play position, or Shift+cursor key, or Ctrl+cursor key (depending on how far you want the play position to move).

Home key - moves the play position to the beginning,
End key - moves the play position to the end.

Thanks for the tips Steve. I was just now grumbling that the mouse wheel didn't work.
