recording volume drops drasticly please help

i plugged a effects pedal into my mic jack n the pc so i can record guitar tracks. while playing and recording i can see the waves then randomly the wave will cut its size to about half or more please explain what this problem is and how to fix it. im using windows vista on a brand new compaq laptop. tanks
