I have two licenses to do this, WireTap for the Mac and Total Recorder for the PC. Sometimes you can force Windows machines to do this by juggling the sound panel settings, but with some of the newer Windows machines you're otta luck.

Windows Control Panel

If this doesn't work, it may never work on your machine without software.

Some people force this to work by connecting the headphone output back into the Line-In with a short jumper cable. That's not optimal, but sometimes it's good enough.

USB and Firewire devices do not have the ability to "record sounds playing on your computer". To get round this limitation, use a pair of audio leads to connect a pair of "Line level outputs" of the motu to a pair of "Line level inputs" (a loop-back connector). This should work very well.

First make sure that the sound that you want to record is actually playing through the output sockets.
Then check that you are able to record through the input sockets.
Assuming both of these tests are positive, the bar faulty leads there should be no problem.

Did you check these two things?

Also, "Total Recorder" (which koz has suggested twice now) is a software solution to the problem.

hey, sorry for such a late reply i thought the problem would never be solved. I was skeptical about purchasing Total Recorder...but I ended up shelling out and now my problems are solved. Many thanks to you guys, great help!
