VHS to PC recording?

Post by falcios » Sun Mar 01, 2009 7:33 pm

I have audio on a VHS tape that I would like to record to my PC. I have no idea where to start? How do I go about doing this?

Thanks in advance.

You'll have to check your hardware to be sure, but usually a computer's sound input will be a stereo 1/8" audio jack (or "stereo miniplug"), and a VCR's sound output will be two RCA connectors, one for left and one for right. So what I expect you need is an adapter cable with two RCA male plugs on one end, and a male stereo miniplug on the other. Or some equivalent combination of adapters and cables. You can buy such things at electronics stores or online, probably $5 to $10. Plug the RCA connectors into the "Audio out" plugs on the back of your VCR, matching red to red (the other plug may be white or black). Plug the miniplug into the "line in" jack on your PC soundcard. (The icon identifying the line-in port is usually some variation of an arrow pointing into a circle.) Then you can probably just start Audacity, click the record button (red circle), and then start playing a VHS. If that doesn't work, check the Input Source drop-down menu on the upper-right of the Audacity screen. It should say something like "Line in", I think. --Allen
