Adding tracks to a recording

I'm extremely new to Audacity. I have a Hammerfall dsp 8 analogue in sound card and was wondering how I add multiple tracks to a recording? i.e. laying down a piano track and adding a bass line on a subsiquent session.

Just hit Record again. Audacity will automatically start recording a new track. If the original track(s) don't play while you're recording the new one, check the "Play other tracks while recording new one" box under the "Audio I/O" tab of the Preferences. --Allen

I want to edit a vocal on an existing track. Everytime I hit record I get a new track. How can I punch in and fix the track I am working on without creating a new track?

You don't need to. Just record it as a new track. This allows you to adjust the exact position of your new part and the volume level of it if necessary so that you can achieve a much smoother transition than if you are doing the rather clunky tape recorder method.

For replacing a section of a recording, the procedure would be:

1) Delete or silence the part that you want to replace.
2) Wind back to a point before the "drop in" and start recording - begin singing before you get to the drop in point.
3) Continue to sing beyond the end of the drop in, then stop.
4) Trim and adjust the vocal parts as necessary
4a) Optional - if necessary, cross-fade the "splice"
4b) Optional - select the original track and the new track and mix them ("Mix and Render" in Audacity 1.3, "Quick Mix" in Audacity 1.2).

Note, Audacity 1.3 offers greater flexibility in that you can cut out the "bad" bit using "split cut". This cuts out the "bad" bit, leaving two independent audio clips in the original track - the audio before the cut, and the audio after the cut. This enables you to adjust the positions of all three clips to get a very neat (can't hear the join) fix.
