Audacity won't open my files -- HELP!!

I've used Audacity for about a year, but this is the first time I've encountered a problem opening up my files. I copied.wav files from my Edirol R-09 digital recorded to my computer. Audacity will open the file once, but when I close it (whether I've edited it or not) and try to reopen, it won't reopen. The file looks like it still exists when I go to My Computer, but in Audacity no file opens (even though the file name appears at the top of the page).

I tried uploading all the files again, restarting my computer, etc., but nothing seems to work. The _data and .aup files are all in the same folder, so no issues there. Please help--I'm on deadline for a client project and this is driving me insane! Any and all help are MUCH APPRECIATED!

Preferences for Windows/Audacity 1.2 are burned into the Dreaded Windows Registry and it's really rough to fix a scrambled Audacity. Just resintalling Audacity won't do it.

What happens if you drill down to where you can see the sound file, right click on it and Open With... Pick Audacity.

Do you have Windows so you can see the real filenames? Windows tries to hide the file extensions "to help you" and this is one time it would be good to see them. You see piano2 when the real filename is piano2.wav.

Right-click My Computer > Explore > Tools > Folder Options > View > [ ] Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

All this is assuming you restarted your computer at least once. If it's a deskside machine, stop Windows, plug the power cord and count to ten before you start again.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try digging around for the file extensions like you suggested.

To answer your question, when I try opening the file with a right click in My Computer, choosing Audacity to open it with, the program opens, the file name is at the top of the bar, but the file never opens...just a blank space staring at me.
