Audacity Forum

Hi all,

I've been using Audacity (version 1.2.6) on a Windows Vista machine for a few months and I h ave some editing questions. I podcast lectures for the iSchool Podcast (http://podcasts.ischool.utoronto.ca) at the University of Toronto. The recordings are purely speech, with no music or anything like that.

There is this weird sound that lingers in the files in their raw state and when I amplify them. I have included a small file (see URL at the bottom) that shows the sort of problem I am encountering. I would appreciate any advice on how to improve the quality of the recording.

Both web connections "Load Files" forever. I never lose the crawling blue worm.

However, If you have a noise reduction task, 1.2 isn't the place to do it. 1.3 has far better noise removal tools. You can put 1.2 and 1.3 on your machine at the same time. Do not try to use both at once.

Crash Course:

Select a portion of a talk with noise only. No voice. That's the "profile." Audacity will try to subtract the profile sound from the show. Start with 18dB, 500Hz and 0 delay.

Effect > Noise Removal

I'll keep trying to find those sound files.

Both files appear empty. It seems you have the same problem I do in recording sermons. As the previous poster said - the latest version of Audacity 1.3 works great at noise removal. I tested it last night and the only thing better than no static noise at all is the noise removal tool which does a rather fine job.
