I was having a problem with Audacity, where all of a sudden, whenever I tried to cut and paste I would get a message saying that a problem occurred at it had to shut down. I didn't know what to do so I thought that if I downloaded the most recent version (the beta) then maybe the problem wouldn't exist.

I downloaded the beta, went to open the file, and it said that I could open it, but if I save it I won't be able to open it in the official version. So I pressed okay...Then a screen popped up that said I had "orphaned files" that were probably left over from when the program crashed. It suggested that I delete these files and in parenthesis said "safe and recommended". So I pressed Okay to delete the "orphaned files" and my file opened up but with no content. I then tried to open my file up again in regular Audacity and it says "can't open file" and "(error2: the system cannot find the file specified)". So is my entire 2 hours of content gone? Or is there a way of getting it back? Please Help!!!!!

The damaged project is now stuck half-way between version 1.2 and 1.3. 1.3 can't open the damaged and scrambled files and 1.2 won't open anything 1.3 touched.

This could be a challenge. Did you ever anywhere in that process Export As WAV? Like right after a live capture? In the middle of the production?

Crash Recovery has come a long way...

Although if you have "orphaned files," this could be interesting.

This is the sort of thing that happens when you fill up your hard drive? Did you? If you're close to the maximum, this is just going to happen again.

When you first launch Audacity 1.2.x after a crash, a dialogue will appear warning there are still files in the temporary folder. These files are 1 MB "blockfiles" with an .au extension. Audacity will ask if you want to delete these files. Say "No."

I got that quote from the wiki. That's actually what it asked about when I started up the beta. It asked if I wanted to delete the "blockfiles" and I said yes. Does this mean it's hopeless now?

Oh, and I didn't export as WAV and my hardrive is not full.

Is there anything else I could do?

Plan the reshoot?

I'm assuming you're working with live captures of a music performance. After each successful live capture, Export As WAV to get a good stable stand-alone sound file. Copy and protect if it's important. Edit from the WAV files. You should never need to do a reshoot. There should always be original capture sound files available to start over if you need to. I'm not wishing that on anybody, but that's a lot easier than trying to explain to the producer that they need to get the band and studio together again.

If you're editing sound files you "borrowed" from the internet, then you may have gotten a bad or unrecognized sound file and that's what caused all this in the first place.
