I've looked for answers to this but can't find anything - or maybe don't recognise what I found...
I have sucesssfully recorded some vinyl onto my iPod via audacity (from the amp output through
a soundcard to audacity rthwn exp as a WAV.)
the usual audacity click/noise removal is OK , but how do I now get rid of the rest of
the background hiss/splutter/crackle which is in with the music ,??
is there another tool, or is the aud beta 1.3/whatever a good option.

Are you transferring 78s? 78 records get insanely noisy if you use an LP stylus instead of the real thing. The 78 groove is wider and the LP stylus drags on the bottom of the groove where the cat hairs live.

If you're transferring older LP albums they can benefit from cleaning. Literally dish soap and warm water. Scrub with a paper towel and dry thoroughly after a bath in distilled water.

Make sure the stylus isn't clogged with cat hair.

After that you use software.

thanks for your comments on this - appreciate the response(sorry haven't got back earlier , bin sick) - are you serious about soap & water - I never heard of that one - all the 'experts' would say buy a proper vinyl cleaning kit ( at no little expense). I'll pick something to give it a go with.
I'm actually recording vinyl from '64 on - next on is moody blues Threshold with a biiig scratch.
I record from a Manticore belt drive with a Goldring stylus i try hard to keep clean.
will look up your recommendation....
