What are supported audio formats?

I am trying to edit some audio tracks (Windows media) and got an error message that Audacity couldn't accept the files due to patent issues. So I burned the files to a disc and still couldn't get them accepted. What format do I need to have, and is there a way to change these files into this format using Windows media player? I am running XP. Thanks.

Darn good question. Windows Media only knows about Windows Media FIles...wma. Audacity will not open those. You may be able to use Super or Switch to convert from wma to wav which Audacity understands just fine. Google.

What sort of disk? A regular audio CD that will play on all CD players? If so, then use either C-Dex or EAC to rip the CD as a WAV file (both programs are free - EAC can make perfect copies from good quality CD's but can be very slow (and or fail) on scratched CD's. C-Dex may produce slightly less perfect on slightly scratched CD's, but does so very much faster. Both programs are useful to have).
