CANNOT OPEN THE FILE

I have a SONY VA10 computer with 560 RAM and XP Professional Service Pack 2.. When I got to the screen asking me to select which of 4 file types I wanted to download I hadn't got a clue what any of them were but selected the PPC as it seemed to refer to a PC. It had the file extension .dmg (whatever that means!) . However when I try to open it Windows asks me what programme I want to use to open it. I don't know. Any ideas? It's taken me three hours so far and I'm running out of patience!! Help!

You may just be in the wrong place. Go here...

...and choose one of the two Windows programs 1.2.6 or 1.3.7. 1.2.6 is stable but really old now and the tools are sparse and dated. 1.3.7 is much more up to date with greatly improved production tools--but it's still a bit experimental.

That would be Apple Power PC.

That would be an Apple Disk Image (a way to ship programs).

I open it on my Mac by double clicking it. You go back and get the right Audacity.
