Exported MP3 has no sound

I'm using Windows Vista, and Audacity 1.2.6, with the lame_enc.dll

I exported the sound by using [File] + [Export MP3]. WhenI open the MP3 in Windows Media Player, I can see the time bar moving, so it's trying to play the audio, but there's no sound.

I've checked the Media Player to make sure the sound wasn't muted, or all the way off. I also checked the Audacity file to make sure the gain was set properly and the track wasn't muted or solo'd. All those settings seem to be fine.

Any suggestions? I can convert wave files through Real Player, but I'd rather not purchase it just to convert wave files.

Thank you,
Laurie California

Let's try and figure out where the problem is.

Close everything. Launch Audacity fresh and File > Open your MP3 file. Don't just click on the MP3 file and depend on Windows to help you.

Does it arrive? Does it play? Is there a blue waveform and does the green play sound meter bounce?

One other item. Where did the original sound come from?

Koz,
Thank you for your response. I got it to work -- although I don't know how.

I discarded the MP3 that wouldn't play, so to test an MP3 through Audacity as you suggested, I generated a two using both the "more flexible" and "more compatible" formats. They both open and play in real player. I'm not sure what went wrong earlier.

To answer your question about where the audio came from, the files were recorded in Audacity. (I record books onto "tape" for my students.)

Thank you again. I'm glad you're available to help with this product. I use it quite frequently. Please pass my gratitude on to those who so generously offer this product (programmers, etc.) My students enjoy reading books on their grade level, but many aren't able to do so without extra support. As the economy worsens and budget cuts gouge already "bare-bones" budgets, I am ever more grateful to have tools that help me teach my students.

Sincerely,
Laurie California
