No sound when recording

I recently purchased a ION Tape2PC USB cassette deck which included Audacity 1.2.6. I installed audacity on my Windows XP laptop with no problems.

However, when I am recording there is no sound. I have verified that playback is set to my internal sound card. I have also verified that Monitor Input is selected on microphone drop-down arrow.

Any ideas of why I cannot hear sound?

Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O
select "software playthrough".
