I decided to try Audacity on a spare PC I had available. It's Abit motherboard has an onboard Realtek AC97 sound device. Recording and playback at 4.1kHz was perfect. Looks like the problem stems from the SoundMAX sound device on my Dell PC motherboard. Recording LPs on this second PC works better for me anyway, as it frees up my primary computer for other tasks. Hope the information in this post helps others with a slow playback issue. Thanks again kozikowski and stevethefiddle for your help. Always good to find such a helpful forum.
