Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

More Latency Issues

Post by canideth_arsenal » Wed Jan 28, 2009 5:09 pm

This is probably covered somewhere but I didn't want to read a shitload of forum posts just to find out the problem.

I reformatted my computer yesterday and before that I've never had a problem with Audacity, I use it for all band recordings. But then I reformat my computer and download the new beta.... here's the problem.

At first there seemed to be no sound coming form the recording, but when I played the recording it sounded fine. I went into preferences and clicked Software Playthough and then it started playing it.

The weird thing is before I could open audacity, select line in and it would play audio from my guitar regardless if I had the program open, but now it only plays strictly when I'm recording.

And not only that is the problem, but now there's like a second latency. All that was a real piss off so I uninstalled the Beta and went back to normal Audacity.... same problem.

All I did was reformat my computer, I never found a need to go into preferences before or adjust any options. The thing's plugged into my Line-in jack and it's never left the jack since I've put it in. And yes I tried unplugging it and unplugging it. :(

Switch off "software playthrough" - as you have discovered, that causes huge latency (it is provided for using USB turntables and stuff, not for live recording).

You did not previously go into Audacity to get it working, because the setting that you are looking for is not in Audacity, it is in your sound card set-up. Look for a loudspeaker icon near the clock and open up the Windows Mixer (or sound card control panel). Set the recording and playback options there. To hear what you are recording, you need to enable sound from the input that you are using - for example, if you are using the "line input" then the line input needs to be enabled in both the recording AND the playback sections.
