So when I opened Audacity to record tonight, it did something it hasn't in the almost year I've used the program. It slowed down my recording, which almost doubled the length of my episode! I was recording with someone who was on the phone on their program-her recording ended up an hour and 25 minutes, and mine ended up 2 hrs and 38 minutes. I fixed my recording by changing the speed through effects, but how do I keep this from happening again?!
By the way, I can change the Hz of individual recordings and make it sound better (44100 to 87000) but when I try setting the next track at 87, then recording, it starts out slow all over again.

Describe the connections. What exists between your lips and the computer? Actually, it may have been recording you fast which gives you a slow playback. The point that can happen depends on what you tell me about the setup. Include how the phone voice gets into the mix. That can be pretty difficult to achieve with any quality.

So your voice pitch went down, too?
As a first aid to this, Go into Audacity Preferences and make sure the settings are where you think they are. Sample rate, bits, Stereo, etc. When you played back your "bad" recording, what were the settings listed on the left-hand panel? I hope you kept the bad recording.
The long recording is 1.858 times longer than the short one. That's not the difference between any of the conventional sample rates....??

I was going to ask you if it did that. Good to know. It doesn't help, but it's good to know. The numbers that count are buried in Edit > Preferences. Those are the ones that Audacity pays attention to when it makes a capture.
Can you break it again? I'm not being funny, repairs are enormously easier and faster if you can reproduce the problem when you feel like it.

I was using a headset with a microphone, and I also took that off and used the mic on my laptop. All the settings were what they should have been, and changing them reproduced the same effects-a very slow playback.
