Windows Vista Business 32-Bit OS Recording Issues

Hi there. I have searched everywhere I know (I'm open to direction) and have tried changing all the things I know to change the Sound menu on both Vista and Audacity 1.2.6, and I am still unable to get Audacity to record from a Sanyo transcriber through a cable to my computer. I had XP in the past and was confident with that process.

I get either silence or, when I changed the authorization options, I got blips where there was some audio. I really need some guidance here, as I have read everything I can and seemingly tried everything I can to get it to work. I record from the transcriber to my computer, save it in a WAV and listen to it through a digital transcriber software and the content is voice interviews, etc. My operating system is listed in the subject line.

Thanks!

<<<Sanyo transcriber >>>

Model number?

<<<through a cable to my computer.>>>

What sort of cable?

What sort of computer? The hardware and model numbers make an enormous difference. Laptop?

If you're using an analog audio jumper cable between, say, the headphone out of the recorder and the audio in of the computer, and it's a laptop, the two may not like to talk to each other. Digital cables can have other problems.

Thanks!

Sanyo Model #TRC 8080, Using just a 3.5 jack from headphone to microphone jack on an XPS Dell tower, desktop.

I have two choices for recording input that show up on Vista, both microphones, one for a rear jack and one for the front jack. I also get a line-in choice that indicates it's a rear jack. I've tried using them all.

If there is a Line-In jack on this machine, then that's the one you should be using. Blue maybe? A lot of Windows Laptops don't have Line-In and those people get burned.

After that, it's a matter of selecting the right input and volume in the Windows Control Panels.

Windows Control Panel

And just to cover the bases, unplug and replug the cable firmly on both ends. We do occasionally get somebody posting back that their cable wasn't plugged in all the way. Make sure the recorder plays properly into actual headphones before you plug in the audio jumper cable.

Thank you very much for your help! You're awesome to spend the time helping us out here.

My solution was: Find the right line in (and it was blue) in the back of my machine to plug in that small jack. NO OTHER JACK ON MY DELL TOWER COMPUTER WORKED. Only that one.

Finally my sound hardware recognized Audacity and then it was just a matter of getting things turned up and selected correctly. The wiki instructions and tips gave me all the information I needed for that.

Thanks again!
