Hi,
When I record another track over lets say, a click track, the click track records onto the second track as well. This stops when I turn playback off. But that is useless because the click track is there for me to hear it while recording. Now its not my mic picking up my speakers, I am using headphones. Is there any way to record while playing back a click track and not have all the other tracks record the click? Audacity will also record something if I run itunes at the same time and turn my speakers and mic off. The computer is recording itself!

And to think how many people get frustrated that they can't do this when they want to, and you have managed to do it without trying.

What is happening is that you have your computer sound system set to record "stereo mix" (sometimes called "What U Hear" or sometimes just "Mix"). As you have correctly deduced, this set-up allows you to record everything that is playing on your computer.

This is a setting in your computer sound system (not an Audacity setting). To switch it off, you need to access either the "Windows Mixer" or your sound cards control panel - look for a loudspeaker icon near the computer clock. You then need to find the "record" settings and change the record input from "stereo mix" to "Mic" or "Line in" or whatever input you are using.

K, I went and did what you said and it is still happening. Do you have any other suggestions?

I am using a Behringer XENYX 1222FX mixing board with a UB200 usb connector on a windows xp operating system.

Yes that's useful - it changes everything

In Audacity, Click on the Edit menu and select "Preferences". On the "Audio I/O" tab there are options for the record and play back devices. What options do you have available and which options do you have selected?

Also, where are your headphones plugged in?

the options for both recording and Playback devices:
MME: Microsoft sound mapper - output/input
MME: Behringer USB Audio
MME: Realtek AC97 Aduio
Windows directsound: Primary soundcard
Windows Directsound: Behringer USB Audio
Windows Directsound: Realtek ac97 Audio

For playback i am using the microsoft soundmapper output
For recording I have behringer USB audio selected.

My headphones are plugged into Headphones/ctrl

I don't understand the abbreviation. Are they plugged into the computer, the mixing desk, or the USB sound card?

oh im sorry, the headphones are plugged into a jack called headphones/ctrl on the mixing board.

You have missed something out of your description. So far we have:

Microphone(s) plugged into mixing desk.
Mixing desk output into UB200 USB
Headphones connected to Control Room Headphone output.

UB200 USB interface connected to computer USB port.
Audacity recording from USB input.

Audacity outputting to computer on-board Realtek AC97 sound card or is it outputting to the UB200 USB?

How are you able to hear anything playing in Audacity?

Have a look in the Windows Control Panel, under "Sounds and Audio Devices" and see what is selected as the default audio device(s).

I think actually the behringer is working as the computer's soundcard. So I just changed both the input and output to the behringer USB, and it is still doing the same thing.

the default is the realtek but i have it changed to the USB.

And are the Behringer (phono socket) outputs connected to anything?
