It's easy to get the wrong version of lame (I did so myself today

)
Full instructions are here:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... stallation
Take care to download the correct version and take care with where you install it (it may be a good idea to get rid of some of the non-working versions to avoid confusion).

Good evening StevetheFiddle,
As far as I can tell, I have done everything the same and followed the instructions implicitly, as I had on the numerous occasions before, but this time it worked first time. Brilliant.
PogueMahone will be happy to hear, I suppose, that Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is mp3ing its' way onto our NAS.
I can only consider that the files were not 'clean' and therefore were not doing what they were meant to.
?I have not checked yet, but is there an easier way to ID the individual tracks rather than typing everything in thirteen times?
Excellent advice, thank you.
Chris

If you are using "Export Multiple", Open up the Metatag editor (File menu) before you Export and enter all of the common information (Album title, Artist, Genre....). You will then only need to add the information that changes from one track to the next. Alternatively, use a third party tag editor after you have exported the files.

Thanks again Steve,
I can see my weekends degenerating into an unending swathe of tapes and vinyl.
Happy days,
Chris

I have tried every method to get version of lame_enc.dll working and it simply isn't.
I've downloaded the file. It's in the audacity directory. I point to the directory and it still doesn't work.

Can you give us some version numbers (Audacity, Lame and Windows) and the web address that you downloaded lame from.

I actually am having the same problem as YME, I'm using the newest version of Audacity (the 1.3.7 beta) which I downloaded directly from the Audacity page, I'm installing on a Windows XP system that was just updated to Service Pack 3, and I've tried several versions of the lame_enc.dll. I tried the packed .exe version from lame.buanzo.com.ar, I've tried an independently located version (that turned out to be old), and I've most recently tried the directly linked copy from the Audacity Lame Installation instructions (which also links to lame.buanzo).
After each try, I start up Audacity, enter the preferences, and choose the locate option, select the file, and afterwards it still displays the "MP3 export library not found" message at the top, and if I attempt to export a file it does the exact same thing. I was thinking it might just be the copy of Audacity was corrupted or something, but the exact same thing was happening with the 1.2.6 version, and I tried re-downloading and installing both versions a couple times just to check.
Thanks for any help!

Okay. I'm running XP and Audacity 1.2.6. I downloaded LAME, unzipped and saved the lame_enc.dll file to my Audacity folder. I can see the file in the folder.
I open Audacity, and I go to Edit>Preferences>File Formats. I click 'Find Library', follow the prompts, find the lame_enc.dll file, open it, and lo and behold the Bit Rate box in the MP3 Export setup section is still dark and unavailable.
I try to Export to MP3, and it prompts me to find the lame_enc.dll file. I find it (again), select it (again), and it says 'cannot open library'. I'm stuck!!!
I can export to WAV just fine (thanks, by the way), but no surprise the files are HUGE.
Can you bail me out? The only other Forum posting similar to mine ended poorly. . .

Dear All,
I’m having a similar problem as others have had downloading the LAME encoder file. I’m using Windows XP and Audacity 1.2.6.
This is what I’ve tried:
1)
http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/
From this link I downloaded -
For Audacity on Windows:
Lame_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe
From that it saved an exe file, not a zip file. Which then asks me to run the application (And saving it as a zip file didn’t work either, it just said it had been corrupted.)
2)
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... stallation
From this link I saved the file ‘lame_enc.dll’ to the Audacity file and went into Audacity to export a wav file as mp3. It came up with the message that it had to locate the lame_enc.dll file. However, when I located it, it came up with the message ‘could not open MP3 loading library’.
When I tried to locate the file through ‘Preferences’ in Audacity’s Edit menu, I located the ‘lame_enc.dll file’ under ‘MP3 Export Setup’ and ‘Find Library’ but nothing happened. It still said ‘MP3 exporting plugin not found’ next to ‘MP3 Library Version’.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tony

I've had the same issue with Audacity 1.2.6 and 1.3.7 beta versions.. "Could not open MP3 encoding library"... At first I thought that this is a bug of audacity and there is nothing I can do but after a
little research I made it work finally..

so let me tell you my steps:
I've downloaded lame mp3 encoder not from
http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/ but from this location:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm
1)Once you unzip and extract the files you will find a "lame.exe" archive, double-click on it to run it(nothing to expect, just an ms-dos window for one milisecond or so).
2)Next, cut all these files including the html ones and paste them in the folder you installed Audacity(default location: C:Program FilesAudacity).
After that, open Audacity and export an mp3 file. When the program asks you to locate "lame_enc.dll" file, browse and go to the installation file where you paste it before with all the other files.
I have the 1.2.6 and it worked.
