I can't set the microphone level slider?
Posted: Tue Jan 20, 2009 2:49 am
Hello,
Thanks for making this software it really is great! There is just one problem when I try and adjust the micrphone volumn the slider sometimes takes but at other times it just defaults to one side or the other? Is this a bug that is being addressed in the new version or is it me? I have attached a screenshot of the slider bar I'm talking about.

I am having a perhaps similar or related problem. I can adjust the input level slider, but moving the slider has absolutely no effect on the input level of the audio I am capturing.
I am running Windows XP, have a Soundblaster Live 24 bit sound card, and I am capturing the audio from an Ion USB turntable, using the USB connection. But I think the USB input bypasses the soundcard? I am new to using Audacity and doing audio capture, so I'm not sure.
Audio levels are frequently too high and I am getting some clipping, but lowering the input level via slider does not work. I wonder if there might be something in Windows that is over-riding the Audacity controls? I've looked around but can't find anything obvious. I've followed all instructions I could find in Audacity Help, documentation, etc, but cannot resolve this issue.
Any insight, suggestions, or help would be greatly appreciated.

That is correct.

Audacity can not control the input level from USB devices. The conversion from Analogue sound to digital data has already been done in the external device. Some USB audio devices have the means to adjust the level, for example, "Blue Snowball" microphones have a control applet for controling the microphone gain. Some USB turntables have a volume knob, though this is sometime inconveniently located on the underside of the turntable. Some USB devices do not have any recording level control.

Thanks, Steve. That explains it. The turntable does have a gain control, located on the underside of the turntable, which should help me adjust input levels. (I wonder if that was designed with inconvenience in mind!
