hi there, hopefully someone can help me out!

While trying to learn this application, I am trying to do the most basic thing - record an mp3 playing on WMP, and save it as a .wav file using Audacity.

OS: Win XP
Sound: RealTek AC97 Audio (integrated with my gigabyte motherboard)

I have everything muted (i.e. CD Player, Microphone, Line-In etc.) except the volume and wave controls.

The sound is being recorded, but the quality is very poor (the gain/bass is way too high compared to the original sound)

I would like to duplicate the quality of the sound coming from the source, how can i achieve this?

Pretty much the exact basic thing that Windows Media was designed to prevent. It sounds like you are recording from your built-in microphone. You need to manage your Windows Sound Panels so you can record 'What You Hear' or 'Mix Out'. Some of the latest versions of Vista make this pretty difficult.

Wow, cant believe it that I cant even do that. I did read this part that you cited, however, i thought that since I have XP (and not vista), perhaps I would be able to achieve what I had plans to do.
