noise and distortion on more than one track

When I record the first track it is fine. All subsequent tracks start out fine but after a few seconds start humming and distorting intermittently during playback. I have checked the recording levels which are fine as well as the mics and guitars, etc. Could this be a problem with my sound card which is not of the highest quality? If not what could be causing this?
