Audacity Forum

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. I was hoping someone could help me with this program.
I used to be able to just play a video on say, Windows Media or VLC player, and be able to record just the audio using Audacity. Then I would use the Lame program to convert the audio to Mp3 format, but now I cannot do that anymore. The dropbox that used to allow me to record from my microphone/Wave-in/etc. no longer functions. Can anyone help me?

You need to set the Windows Mixer, or your sound card control panel to record from "Stereo Mix".

That's the problem I'm having though, I can't select anything from that dropdown box, it won't let me pick anything, its just blank. Or am I thinking of something else? Sorry, this is giving me such a hard time, I used to be good at using this program.

The "drop down box"? I bet you are still looking in Audacity for the problem/solution, but the issue is not there - the issue is with setting up the computer sound system.

Audacity can sometimes talk to the sound card and tell the sound card which input it wants to access, but that is entirely dependent on whether the sound card drivers will allow Audacity to do so, and on modern computers this is often not the case, in which case you need to speak to the sound card driver directly. This is done either, through the Windows Mixer (look for a loudspeaker icon near the computer clock) or through the sound cards control panel (look for an icon near the clock) or failing either of hose, through the Windows Control Panel.
