Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

MAy I use Audacity in a book?
I am writing a book and would like to include how to use it in a chapter.I think I understand that I can make a CD that contains it for distrubition with the book as long as I include the source code as well(please let me know if I am wrong about this).

I posted this question to one of the administrators. They will have a much better idea than I do.

Yes you may include a CD containing Audacity as per the General Public License (GPL):Onceler wrote:I am writing a book and would like to include how to use it in a chapter.I think I understand that I can make a CD that contains it for distrubition with the book as long as I include the source code as well(please let me know if I am wrong about this).
http://audacityteam.org/about/license
So, you must include:
1. a verbatim copy of the GPL and
2. the Audacity source code, or a written offer to supply that code
If you merely include our Windows .exe installer and do not modify it, this will fully comply, because the installer includes the GPL and an offer in README.txt for users to obtain the source code from us.
Unless your book concentrates on Windows software, you may want to include the two .dmg installers for Mac, too.
* In your CD menu and/or cover, please include the trademark after the name "Audacity", as you see in our logo, namely "Audacity(R)". If you include an image of the Audacity logo, please use one of
these which includes the trademark:
rectangular white background Photoshop format 506 x 200:

square white background Photoshop format 253 x 100:

square transparent PNG 163 x 159:

* The first time you use the word "Audacity" in your text, please follow it with the same trademark symbol (R)
* Please make the following citation in your book respecting our copyright and trademark as follows (this may be in a reference at the end of the whole book if you wish):
"Audacity(R) software is copyright (c) 1999-2008 Audacity Team.
Web site: http://audacityteam.org/. [It is free software
distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.]
The name Audacity(R) is a registered trademark of Dominic Mazzoni."
The section inside [ ] is optional, but the first and last sentences should be present exactly as above, without any additional text interspersed into them.
You will then be able to use screenshots of Audacity in your chapter if you wish, either taken from our web site, or any you took yourself. Note: if your screenshots include anything to do with LAME or MP3 encoding, please state "Audacity does not distribute LAME MP3 encoders, but supports linking to third-party LAME libraries for MP3 encoding subject to the legal precedents for software patents in the country of use".
Thanks
