Using a USB link into my computer from a turntable, the recording is distorted (too loud). Help suggests looking for a volume control on the turntable, but there isn't one. I am running XP and Realtek AC97 sound. Can anyone help please?

Which USB TT? Or is a normal TT with an external USB soundcard?

And BTW with a USB TT connected you will be using the ADC/soundcard in the USB TT for input (though you will need the Realtek in your PC for output).

Hard to find any real details about your deck on t'interweb - particulary no manual or full tech specs.

So.... are you absolutely sure that there is no gain control on your deck? The ION that I used to have had one, but it was in a non-obvious place, underneath at the back. Have a good look in the manual and have a good look around the deck.

Your deck does appear to have RCA output leads in addition to the USB output, right? If so then you should be abble to plug the RCA output to the 3.5mm line in jack socket on your PC. This will by-pass the soundcard in the TT and use your PC's soundcard for recording - and on this you should retain control of the gain level.

Absolutely no volume control on the deck. No mention of one in the manual.
Did try the RCA method, but that too was distorted, then found a "line/phono" switch.
RCA now works fine, but record volume controlled from the "line" input of the computer volume control.
The speaker control on Audacity just causes echo and feedback during recording, and the microphone control does nothing.

Have tried TT and Audacity on a Toshiba laptop using "Soundmax" drivers, and USB works fine, but can't find how to control the record volume.
So the original problem of distortion via Realtek must be some sort of mis-match or conflict?

At least now I can use the darned thing. Thank you.
