Have problems recording audio with Realtek HD

Hi guys,

On my previous PC (XP) I had Audacity and when I tried to record via my speakers no sound was being registered. I played around with the drop down menu in the top right and this fixed the problem.

I now have a new PC (Vista) with Realtek HD and what I hear isn't registering when recording, it's just dead air. From a google search it seems a lot of people are having similar problems in other sound recorders. I've managed to enable Stereo Mix but the drop down menu in the top right of audacity isn't highlighted, meaning I can't look for an input. Is there ANY solution to this please?

Any help would be appreciated.

I think I have the solution to your problem. I had the same problem with my new computer that has a RealTek Audio Device. Here is what you need to do. If you have Vista. Go to Sound in the Control Panel's classic view
Select the Recording tab and right-click any of the devices listed.
Check "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices".
Stereo Mix should show up. Right click on Stereo Mix and select enable device then set it as default recording device. This worked for me. I hope you find it helpful.
