i apologize if this is a redundant post....ive searched through most and havent found an answer yet, so my last try was to bother you guys!!

ive been trying for HOURS to create a ringtone. i started having problems once i got to exporting....but i think i got through it. i was able to change it to an mp3 file, save it to my hard drive, then send it to my SD card. problem occurs that once i put the card into my phone and go into the file, the file is empty although when on my computer, its there and plays.

i am really new to all of this, especially with the technical jargon. if anyone can be of any help, i would really appreciate it. im at the point where i may have to pay the $3 for a damn ringtone that doesnt sound completely cheesy.

this could really be fun if i had a clue as to what the hell i was doing......

Is it written anywhere that it needs to be an MP3 file to work as a ringtone?

i couldnt find ANYTHING in the manual or online about what form the ringtones need to be in, like it shows in the 'how to make ringtones' example. i have a pantech matrix. i just took a shot it being an MP3. there are old ringtones saved on the card from my old phone that are .aac but they obviously won't play.

The problem is that the cell-phone people want you to spend money, so they deliberately miss out important details from the manual to "encourage" you to spend.

Your best bet is to look for user forums for your type of cell-phone and find out if anyone else has managed to get it to work. The editing part of the job we can help you with, but knowing exactly what format the final audio needs to be in is likely to be specific to the particular cell-phone that you have.

You just need to find one MP3 file that works and you'll be in business.
If you can find anyone who has a working MP3, then ask them for a copy and use SUPER (by erightsoft) to ell you the exact format. Failing that you could try making a whole bunch of MP3's in different formats (mono, stereo, 128kbps CBR 64 kbps CBR, 128kbps VBR....) and see if any of them work. Keep the file length short, there will probably be a maximum file length. You may find it easier to use a standalone MP3 encoder as changing the Export format in Audacity is a bit of a faff.
