Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I'm new to Audacity and Open Source software - please help!

Post by jalan7 » Tue Dec 30, 2008 6:33 am

Hi everyone!
I'm very new to this whole Open Source thing, and thus I have some questions about Audacity. I've heard really good things about the program, and as a musician, I'm very interested in downloading and using it!

My questions are as follows:
1. Can I freely and legally use this software to produce my own recordings to sell to others? And does this apply to all Open Source/Copy Left software - that they all can be used to produce things to sell? (I'm not speaking about selling the software, but rather, what I create with it. I'm so tired of Microsoft... although I purchased and own Word, I can't technically make things which have their clipart in them and sell my own writings. I know they wouldn't know either way, but I'm a Christian, and thus try to obey all the applicable laws.)
2. What page should I download it from? (There appear to be different sites offering the software.)

I'd really appreciate all responses! I really hate all the legalese that comes with the programs I currently have. Basically, I'm a small business owner who's trying to generate more income and gets incredibly frustrated by buying programs but then having to purchase additional "licenses" to create commercial products from them (although again, I'm not meaning selling their software - just music and documents I create with them). My uncle recenty told me about Open Source and Copy Left stuff, and thus I'm really interested in these things. Thanks so much! Jason

I think sourceforge is the official home. You not only need the program but the add-ons as well. Add "lame" in order to export MP3 files of your shows, for one example.

There are some convoluted rules under which you can actually sell Audacity, but anybody can use it and anything you produce with the software is yours to do with as you see fit.

Basically you can use Audacity in any way you like and can use it freely for recording, commercial or otherwise.
Full (and easy to understand) information about the licensing terms for Audacity are here: http://audacityteam.org/about/license

Follow the links on this page for downloading Audacity http://audacityteam.org/download/
Note that the download page contains adverts, so make sure you download Audacity rather than one of the commercial products that are advertised.
