I have an Ion USB Turntable (TTUSB10) and when I plug in the USB line, the sound system shuts cannot be activated.

For example, if I am playing a CD and plug in the USB, I get a beep that the machine recognizes a new device and it continues to play. If I stop the CD it cannot start playing again. The CD runs but no sound comes out. If the USB line is connected I get no windows sounds either.

The turntable came with Audacity 1.2.6 and EZ Vinyl converter.
I have used both Audacity 1.2.6 and 1.3.3 before with earphone line input from a tape player, and it worked well, but how do I configure either windows or Audacity to accept the USB input?

I tried to record a vinyl record and could see the audacity waveforms but with no sound. I disconnected the USB wire and tried to play it back. It worked, but I can't get sound while recording.

My machine is a Dell 3000 with XP Home SP3.

You need to wade around inside the Windows Sound Control Panels. When your turntable introduces itself to the computer, it takes over the pathway into the computer. So far, so good, but sometimes takes over the pathway back out, too. The computer is trying to play your music back to the turntable where it came from.

Sometimes you need to fix this with updated drivers. Go up to their web site.

Ok, that part was correct. When the Turntable was plugged in, it changed both the input AND output to USB Audio Codec. Switching the output back to the digital Audio MAx allows the CD to play while the turntable is plugged in, BUT
when recording from vinyl I still can't get sound, but I can play sound when not recording.
There must be a setting in Audacity? Could it be?

All you need to do is to turn monitoring on - just click once inside the red recording meter area.

This is a well-hidden, poorly documented feature of Audacity - and the visual cues to show that monitoring is on is only the bars moving (and if you have a null signal they don't move!).

Thanks I figured it out. >Edit >preferences > Audio in/out check "play other tracks" and "software playthrough"

The problem came about becasue I reinstalled Audacity fromt eh CD that came with the turntable. Bad idea.
