Cleaning audio from vinyl

A somewhat newbie to Audacity.

I've made some recordings of some old vinyl records and cassettes and the clicking and noise isn't and issue. What I'm having trouble is getting the sound cleaner, more robust, more depth, removing tinning sound, etc. Something comprable to cd quality if it is at all possible. Can anyone suggest a set of filters, links, etc. where i can start effectively improving the over all sound quality without constantly guessing. Ive made some improvements but it seems either I increase the bass end and loose the fine musical details or no bass and screaching. Also, is there a way to remove a very very slight reverb?

Basically you're trying to work the wrong end of this problem.

You need to ensure that you get the highest quality signal delivered into Audacity for recording - adjusting the signal afterwards may provide some improvements, but is never a substitute for a good qulaity source signal.

First question to ask is: you are passing the turntable signalthrough a pre-amp, or your TT has a built-in pre-amp, right? You need to do this to get the necessary RIAA equalization applied - without this the sound will sound thin and be lacking in bass.

Next thing to check: is your turntable in good condition and set up properly? Is it time to consider buying a new cartridge or stylus?

Are your connectors in good condition, and clean? And you are plugging into the Line-in on your PC and not the mic-in?

Basically if the TT sounds good when it is plugged into your hi-fi or mini-system, then it should be capable of delivering a good signal to Audacity.
