If I use 4 USB microphones with Audacity do I still need some kind of mixer or hardware? I think...that if a mic is plugged into a usb port, windows xp will give it a slice of the register. It seems to me that it is a computer thing to manage the signal from the mic to give it its own track.

Audacity will recognize one sound device. One USB microphone counts as one device, so yes, the one sound device it recognizes will need to be a mixer.
