How do I convert a track to monophonic

I want to convert a couple of mp3s to monophonic tracks.
I need some music or other test tracks in mono to adjust the speaker/headphone volume so each partly deaf ear can perceive the same volume in the headphones. One ear is lot worse than the other and adjusting the balance is hard with stereo rock and roll.
Some one suggested I could do this in Audacity but I can't find any mention of "monophonic" in the manual index or knowledge base.

In Audacity 1.2 it's a master class in editing. In Audacity 1.3, it's a key click or two. Edit > Select > All. Tracks > Stereo To Mono.
You can install both Audacities on your machine. Just don't use both at once.
You might like the "Left-Right" sound track I recorded...

It's all done with one microphone. I pushed my voice to the left, right, and center in editing. The last cut is a special effect and can be ignored. This piece is usually used to check for badly wired speakers. If my "Left" speech comes out of your right side, you know you messed something up.

I think in your instance, if you haven't already?
Load your track into Audacity, click the black drop-down triangle to the right of the track title, scroll to split stereo track, click split stereo track, now your stereo track is two separate tracks with their own volume controls, which you can adjust individually. Hope that helps.

<<<now your stereo track is two separate tracks with their own volume controls, which you can adjust individually.>>>
But if the object is to create a mono performance in order to adjust the computer's playback system, that may not help. What are the rest of the steps to create mono?

The easiest way is to use Audacicty 1.3 (the Beta - but now a very stable beta) where the developers have kindly added a stereo to mono tol. In 1.3.6 it is accessed through
Tracks > Stereo Track to Mono
You can upload 1.3.6 from here:
