Can't properly record sound from internet. Driver?

My computer is a Dell Dimension 5150 running XP-professional. It has a Sigmatel audio card. Sometimes when I reboot the system, I'm informed that the "IDT Audio System tray" is in some kind of error and it needs to close.

When I try to record from YouTube or internet radio, Audacity gives the input options of Line In, Rear microphone or microphone. Only "Line in" works at all, and then only if I raise the volume on the speaker and the level of the microphone to maximum. Even then, it doesn't record with sufficient amplitude, and to get anything loud enough to use I have to use the amplify function, and of course that involves noticable distortion.

Another zinger is that sometimes it doesn't work at all. BTW, when I try to listen to sound producing files on my own machine or the internet, there is no problem.

I've read some other posts like mine, and it ususally is some kind of driver problem. Can anyone help here?

Not always, Sometimes you're in the wrong Windows Sound Panel.

Windows Control Panel

By the way, you are recording the leakage and defects in your sound card, not the actual show. That's why it's so low and thin. With the proper panel settings applied, you should have natural level without painfully digging for it.
