Vista 64 bit--Audacity freezes on Record

My grandson has a Windows Vista 64 bit computer with 4GB of RAM. We loaded Audacity 1.2.6. We can play mp3 files with no problems, but if we try to record anything with it, the bar shows up, but the cursor line freezes at the start. It blinks, but won't move to record. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

There are a number of Vista specific issues described on this page of the Audacity wiki:

Also, several users of Vista 64 have reported problems with Audacity 1.2.6 which have been solved by upgrading to Audacity 1.3.6 (in addition to following the advice given in the wiki).

Okay, I got Audacity 1.3 and it is now recording. I also got a new audio driver, but remember being told once before about drivers, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Would I be better off installing it or should I leave it alone until he has trouble?

Hi,
I had already looked to the link, but I have a big problem, in the control panel of Vista, in the tab of "Recording", I only had "headset microphone" and "microphone", I already click on "show enable devices" , what can I do? please helpppp!!!!

Did you find this part of the Audacity wiki?

You need to put a check mark by "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices".
If you still only have "headset microphone" and "microphone" available, then those are the only ones available.
Updating the sound card drivers
may provide additional options, but not necessarily - it all depends what options the manufacturer decided to include in the device.
The sound cards in laptop computers are often limited in both the available features, and sound quality. On PC laptops, for any serious, or half serious, recording work you are likely to need an external sound card.

Hi, yes I already mar "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices", and only appears "Microphone" and "headset microphone"...Please, do you know what can I do...?

What do you want to do? What are you trying to record? What equipment do you have?

I am trying to record a sound from my computer, without external sounds, only the computer sound.
I have a Laptop Hp Pavilion with Vista, AMD 64....
