I Can't Export Anything in 44 KHZ!

Post by Markntosh » Mon Dec 22, 2008 3:11 am

Hello. Just today i was doing some work on a file for use in a video game. I've done this before, but some of my settings had changed since then. The clip is about 24 seconds long and plays fine in a music player. I realized that the file wouldn't play in game, for some reason. :o I decided it was best to use a lifeline and PMed a friend about it. We entered a Steam Chatroom and he explained that the sound had to have the right Khz. I looked at my previous files (The one that works) and it is 44 khz. However, when I select 44100 Hz for Default Sample Rate, it does not export in 44 Khz, but 48 Khz. I know because I checked the file's properties.

Is there a problem with audacity? Is there a way to fix it?

NOTE:

I'm exporting these clips as .wav's AND .MP3's and neither of them are in 44 Khz.
Umm... I forgot.

44100 is a standard sampling frequency. That's the number used for the music on your music CDs. 48000 is a standard music sampling frequency, too, but that one is used by the video people.

You can change Audacity on the fly with the sampling rate window in the extreme lower left. You need to know that going down results in poorer audio and going up doesn't make the audio get any better. The lower rate damage will just get clearer and more accurate.

Just change the Project Rate in that window before you Export and the exported audio file will use that as the sample rate.

Dropping from 48kHz to 44.1kHz will not be very noticeable in terms of sound quality - it will just roll off a bit of the highest treble, bringing the frequency response down to "CD quality".
