play just clicks

In tyring to play a previously recorded mp3 file, I see the wave spectrum just fine, but when i click play, I get a click sound through the speakers, as the meters light with the click and that's about it.
I'm using vista home prem with audacity 1.2.6

I seem to be able to record , at least through system mic. but playing back files is not happene'n

But it does play files you make, right?

Since Audacity knows how to manage an MP3 file, what you have isn't an MP3 file. It's a highly compressed "Something Else." Convert with Super or Switch into a nice WAV file and then import into Audacity.
