I got Audacity 1.2.4 last year while using Windows XP. Everything was fine until I got Vista. Installation of Audacity on my Vista OS went fine. Everything works, including sound, but now I have no sound on iTunes or Internet or any other programs. Have tried altering various sound settings but can find no fix. Surprised I found no similar posts in the forum. Can someone help?

Are you by any chance using a USB device - a USB turntable say?

1.2.4 is now very old and the very least you should upgrade to 1.2.6 (1.2.4 has memory leaks) - or even to the beta 1.3.6 which is pretty stable now. You can get the updates from: http://audacityteam.org/ - IIIRC there have been other postings that said Vista works bettter with the beta version.

You can find info about Audacity on Vista from the Wiki: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... s_Vista_OS

Yes. I am using a usb turntable. Are you saying a download should fix the problem? If so, which do you recommend? When I bought this last year, there were no instructions geared toward Vista, which was fine because I didn't have have it at the time. When I bought a system as a gift this year, I snagged the 'update' sheet on Vista and applied it to my system. Like I said, the turntable, etc. works fine...just having Vista sound problems.

I followed the links to download 1.3.6 and then 1.2.6. Each time I was directed to a page that offered only AVS Audio Editor. I downloaded and installed, but it didn't fix the problem. Suggestions?

Was able to download 1.2.6 from Cnet and 1.3.6 from downloadsquad. Installed both. Still no sound on Windows. Can anyone help?

Yes now that I know that you have a USB TT I can probably help.

When you plug in a USB device like the TT that you have - Audacity (and Windows) hand over control of the sound services to the external USB soundcard that you have built-in in you turntable - both input and output sound services.

Now since your TT doesn't have any speakers you obviously won't get any sound - not even the usual Windoes beeps etc.

All that you need to do is to set Audacity and windows to retarget the sound output onto your PC's on-board soundcard (laeving the input targeted on your USB CODEC). In Audacity use Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > Playback Device - in Windows use Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback.

Note that you may need to stop Audacity and restart it for the preferences changes to take effect.

This bear-trap catches out loads of folks - myself included when I started out ......
