distortion when recording via sound card

Post by bineal » Sat Dec 20, 2008 12:42 pm

from playback on guitar pro 5, i have a recorded a few .wav files via my sound card. they sound just as they did on guitar pro. but when i try to do the same thing now, the recording becomes heavily distorted. i've checked the sound card, theres nothing wrong with it.

any ideas on what might be causing the distortion and how to prevent it?

In some versions of Guitar Pro you can export directly as a WAV file. If you have this option, then you will get better results doing it this way than by playing the song and recording it. (You need to use the Guitar Pro synthesizer for this to work).

If you do not have that option, go into your sound card mixer/control panel and lower the recording level. You may get some hints about how to do that from this page: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... s_Problems

thanks for the reply

i used the export as wav. option from guitar pro and thats just how it worked out. but the odd thing was that this method gave me several really clear recordings, then only about 10 minutes after one of these clear recordings, the next one was highly distorted. i very sure there's nothing wrong with the recording levels as i have checked them thoroughly. what could have possibly changed in such a short time period to alter the recording so drastically? thanks again

When you record, how high are the (red) recording meters going?
Note that you can grab the recoding meters with the mouse and move it around - if you stretch it out to the full width of your screen it is much easier to read the recording level.

Could you post a short sample of the distorted audio (preferably exported as FLAC) somewhere on the internet and post a link to it.
