Backward Compatibility

Greetings. I have been using v. 1.2.2 for years, never making the move to upgrade. However, now I want to gut my C drive and reload everything so now I'll have to upgrade Audacity too. But I'm completely paranoid I will lose access to all my data which is the reason I was always afraid to upgrade in the first place. Can someone please assure me this won't happen before I take the plunge? Many thanks!

Let me predict the past. All your work is in Audacity Project (AUP) form. You saved your work regularly like mom always said to, and now you have all your shows in folders on the hard drive--that you want to gut.

Forget gutting. Get a new, second machine.

Audacity projects are not one file. They are thousands of files all related and interlinked. Moving a Project is possible, but many people arrive in the forum complaining that they can't open their recently moved, irreplaceable show and what should they do?

Move it all back and hope you lived a good clean life.

Can you still open all your old shows? Chances are good, no. Audacity projects are brittle and easy to permanently damage.

If you ignored mom and Exported As WAV at every opportunity, then you have a collection of stable, universal WAV music files that will play anywhere in the world--including a second hard drive. Go for it.

Audacity 1.2.6 will open Audacity 1.2.2 projects.
Audacity 1.3.x will open Audacity 1.2.x projects.

but Audacity 1.2.x can not open Audacity 1.3.x projects.

As Steve says - but note too that once you have opened a 1.2 project in 1.3 and Saved it - then it becomes a 1.3 project and can no longer be opened in 1.3.

And as Koz says WAVs are good - transportable most places - and will certainly let you shuffle between 1.2 and 1.3 with ease/

Did you mean "can no longer be opened in 1.2?" that wouldn't be a problem.

D'oh...

- yes I did mean can't then be opened any more in 1.2

Though note that if you export a 1.3 project as a WAV file you can then trot this file over to 1.2and open it up quite happily - not sure you'd either want to or need to though as these later releases of 1.5 from say 1.3.5 onwards are pretty stable now.

BTW it's not just lack of caffeine - I'm also a notoriosly lousy typist, despite using computer keyboards for around forty years now (I did once post a feature request for a "speel chucker" for the forum - but so far, it hasn't happened).
