Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Step 1
"don't panic". Have a nice cup of tea (I'm English) and relax for a while.

Step 2
See if you can record with Windows Sound Recorder (it only records 60 seconds, but is good for trouble shooting).

Step 3
If Windows Sound Recorder works, then reset the preferences in Audacity:
1) Go to http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/audacitydl.html , scroll to the bottom of the page and right-click over "Audacity 1.2.6 reset Preferences .reg file for Windows"
2) Save this .reg file to your drive
3) Double-click the saved .reg file and click "yes" when asked if you want to add the information to the Registry

Restart Audacity and go to "Ediit > Preferences". On the "Audio I/O" tab, select "Microsoft Sound Mapper" as the recording and playback device.

Restart Audacity.

(Note, if Windows Sound Recorder does not work, then you need to fix that first - the place to start looking would be to check that your sound card is correctly installed, then check the settings in the sound card control panel/mixer)

I'm running out of ideas now.
When it worked the first time, were you logged in as the same user as you are using now?

What did you record with Windows Sound Recorder?
Are you recording (trying to) the same thing with Audacity?

I don't understand what you mean - what exactly are you trying to record?

Hi Oshkash
Try Control panel, sounds and audio devices, click the audio tab, click the drop down arrow alongside sound recording and see if your input devise is listed, if it is click on it and click apply, then try again.

LAME is required for encoding MP3's.
