As a fine, upstanding user of Windows NT, I can tell you it wouldn't make any difference. Windows NT didn't support audio/video almost at all. I struggled for years trying to get simple sound recoding and playback and was shocked the first Windows 98 Special Edition I found. That was the first time all the drivers and program hooks were made available. Simple control panels with two options suddenly blossomed into full-on multi-element production tools.

Win98SE was basically a fancy Win3.1, so your upgrade path would be XP.

There was another poster on the forum trying to get Windows 98 pre-SE to work. Same problem. Second Edition was the upgrade that brought all the tools and environments.

Not really.
Win98SE was a fully 32 bit OS, whereas 3.1 was a hybrid 16/32 bit OS.
Win98SE used the FAT32 file system whereas 3.1 used FAT16.
Win98SE supports USB and UDMA, which 3.1 did not.
Win98SE supports Win32 API, whereas 3.1 only supported Win16 API.
Win98SE included Internet Explorer which 3.1 did not.
Win98SE used "Windows Explorer" shell, whereas 3.1 use "Program Manager".
Win98SE supports 32-bit preemptive multitasking, which 3.1 does not.

The list goes on (Windows update, network sharing, large disk support...). Win98SE really is radically different to Windows 3.1 (or 3.11 for workgroups, which is probably the best know and the pinnacle of the 3.x series).
It would be more accurate to describe Win98SE as a "fancy Win95" (for "fancy", read "stable").

However, Win98SE is now unsupported by Microsoft and will soon be followed by Windows XP in the list of obsolete operating systems. The "End of Life Cycle" for Windows XP has been extended several times and is now well beyond Microsoft's original "expiry" date.

If you are running old PC hardware that does not support Windows Vista, then the choices are to use XP, or use an obsolete operating system such as Win98SE ("Windows ME" and "Win98 first edition" are not recommended), or upgrade to Linux.

Back to the original question - are you running NT4 as a desktop system? Does it have a sound card? Any particular reason that you're using NT4?
