Hello, my projects wav files and mp3 files are displayed in the Audacity program. I can see them on screen and in the particular audacity project as a wave pattern yet, some of the wave pattern sound cuts in and out throughout the project but the wave form is Not Flat where there is no sound. How can I HEAR my saved data ie the wav and mp3 files in my project? The screen shows a wave pattern throughout yet there is no sound on parts of the wave pattern. Only the wave pattern is displayed but there is no sound. When I add an effect it then shows me where my loss of sound starts and ends on the pattern. It goes flat only when I add an effect. Is my data lost where there is no sound? Why does'nt my saved wave data go flat where there is no sound instead of showing a wave patern?

You have probably moved, deleted or renamed some of the audio data files, or by some other means made them unavailable. See here for how Audacity handles its data:

If there have been absolutely no other changes, then moving the files back should restore the project. However, Audacity projects are easily damaged and any small discrepancy from the original file structure can really mess it up and make it one heck of a job to sort out.
As you will have learned from that link, the Audacity Project file (.aup) contains a long list of references to the fragments of data that make up the project. Every one of those references has to correctly point to the corresponding bit of audio data. You can open the .aup file in a text editor (for example Notepad) to have a look how it does it. It is possible to manually edit the .aup file, but this is generally not recommended (except in emergencies) as it is very easy to turn your project into dust.
