Hi all,
First post...so take it easy.
I have an mp3 file which i can play fine - it is about 40 mins long. I try open this in Audacity and it only shows 0.25 seconds. I am trying to edit the beginning of the recording.
Any help?

You don't have an MP3 file. You have a highly compressed Something Else. If you tell your Windows to show you file extensions, it will probably turn out you have AAC, MP4 or one of the other audio formats. Sometimes right-click > Properties will tell you that, too.
Convert the file with Switch, Super, or iTunes to a WAV and edit that.

Do you have a sound cue? Click on the sound cue on the timeline and drag left, to the beginning of the piece. That portion of the timeline will get dark. Press Delete.
If you mess up, Edit > UNDO is your friend. You can also use the select and Zoom tools to get really tight into the timeline and see what you're doing.
Basic Editing is covered in the wiki tutorials.
