Recording always sounds like it is underwater

Hello.

I used to use audacity on XP and it was great. I am recording acoustic classical guitar and it was all fine.

Now I have Vista and when I record in Audacity using either the built-in mike on the laptop or the little minidisc mike which used to work perfectly on my old machine, the recording immediately sounds like it is underwater. It renders it useless. It doesn't matter what the volume or gain settings are.

I would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks.
BP

You will need to carefully examine your sound card settings - They may be applying some effects to your recorded sounds before they get to Audacity.

Thank you! It did have some echo cancellation thing and noise suppression checked so I unchecked it. I will see the next time I record if it is better and let you know.

Thanks again.
