long voice fades after recording

I have a cheap mic, but I just bought a new one in case
the mic was the prob. Same result. When I sing long
notes, they last for appx. 2 secs, and then start to
fade out quickly! Please help. tyvm

I am using an IBM desktop, Windows XP Professional
Version 2002, Service Pack 2
