Hi

Yes I am getting severe level readings when records are being played and the meters remain at the high end.
Distortion is detected even during playback of the recording before saving (ie Playing back current recording)
At times you will get a clip in the sound due to this over recording level.

In my terminology I need to somehow get the signal strength reduced on the input signal.

Any ideas ?

Does the Kamm USB TT that you are using have a gain control anywhere? I used to run an ION iTTUSB and that did have one.

As I explained earlier, with these USB TTs Audacity hands over complete control of the sound services to the USB decice - and this includes control of the signal level. So if there is no control on the TT you may be stuck - apart from openinig it all up and putting an attenuating device betwwen the onbuard pre-amp and the bit of circuitry that handles your USB services in the TT - i.e. effectively installing your own volume control.

I tried to look at the detailed specs of the KAM TTs on t'interweb - but the specs are insufficient and the manual won't download so I can't tell if you have a gain control - I do note though that the KAM external USB device to "turn your deck into a USBTT" does appear to hav ejust such a gain control - so it's possible that you may have one somewhere on the deck.

Another option for you would be to use that RCA outputs - I believe the KAM's have these too, normally fot connecting to your hi-fi - and connect these to your line-in in your PC. This will be effectively by-passing the ADC and USB services in your KAM - and using instead the ADC (soundcard) in your PC. Configured this way you should then be able to use the Audacity input sliders to control the input/recording signal level.
