recording not working

i'm not sure if this is the right place for this or not but

whenever i record something not from the cpu it sounds fine, but when i record stuff in the cpu it just plays back as a muffled static noise all the time. it worked on my old cpu but i have vista now.

Vista can be a bit of a Pig.
