ASIO SDK file

Post by Audiop » Tue Nov 25, 2008 10:49 am

Hi!

In order to get better performance from Audacity on my laptop running XP I registred at Steinberg for downloading the ASIO SDK file.

When I try to log in I am denied access so I can not get the SDK file (I have tried several times with two different mail adresses).

Is there some other way of getting this file? Would it be illegal to have it sent to me by a fellow DAW'er?

Thanks!

Do you get an error message? (has your IP address been banned or something like that?)

Probably.

The main performance benefit of ASIO is in "real time" processing. Audacity does not do real time processing, so there is little performance benefit.

The main reasons why people want to use ASIO are
(a) There sound card only works with ASIO drivers,
(b) They want to use Audacity with other ASIO enabled software.
(c) They just want to see if they can.

(a) is unusual as most ASIO sound cards will also work with WDM (Windows) drivers.
(b) If this is the case, then it may be easier to use a multi-track program that supports ASIO out of the box for your recording (such Reaper, Krystal, Cubase....) and then use Audacity for your editing without ASIO.
(c) Try downloading it from a friends house.

Hi!

No I can't see any reason why I should have been banned or denied access.

I have two firewire interaces and neither of them work with any software on my laptop without clicks and interupts. With ASIO it works pretty well.

I still want to use Audacity though because I like it a lot and would like to use it for eight channel tracking. Fast and intuitive and I also like the clear big view of waveforms. Also I like the option to save multichannle wav files which few other software can (Reaper can not for example).

One of my interfaces is an 8-channle device but I can only use two channels with Audacity. I don't see an option to choose more than two channels. Strange thing is I think I actually recorded eight channels earlier, possibly with an older version of Audacity than the latest.

The interfaces also has WDM drivers but I'm not sure any of them is bypassing the windows mixer, which is a must as it seems.

So to sum it up, I want to try ASIO to see if I can get 8 channels of streaming audio without clicks and interupts.

Thanks for input!

/Peter
